Mr. Bristol was part of several businesses in Statesville including Bristol, Robinette, & Co, then Bristol, Tharpe, & Co. which became LB Bristol Co. in 1905. This store carried many items including hats, shoes, trunks, and lace curtains. Mr. Bristol was a sharp businessman and his receipts of inventory that he purchased from one company in 1901 totalled $ 1,500,281.00. He also owned a real estate firm. Mr. Bristol became mayor of Statesville in 1917. In 1918, the Spanish Influenza hit Statesville and was the worst epidemic in the history of Statesville. In October, 1918 Mayor Bristol and the Board of Aldermen issued a proclamation closing all schools, churches, Picture Shows, and all public gatherings. In November, 40 cases each week were reported in Statesville. Everything remained closed through the end of 1918.
