515 West End Avenue Statesville Woman's Club 1928 Organized in 1920, the Statesville Woman's Club visualized the great things women could accomplish if they banded together. This 2-story Tudor Revival club house, rebuilt in 1928 after a fire destroyed the original building, has a tapestry brick first story and a half-timbered cypress and stucco second story. For many years all exterior wood was stained with used machine oil to maintain its dark patina. The central entrance boasts double-leaf doors, with a limestone surround and an overhead Tudor arch. This building was constructed to house 2 apartments on the second story demonstrating the business sense that these women had in the 1920's. While many other woman's clubs were constructed in NC and other states, this was one of the only ones to think of how the building could work to make money even in the future. |
